Food Systems and Public Health Conference - April1-3, 2009
In March 2007, while the U.S. Congress initiated debate on the Farm Bill, 40 experts in childhood obesity, nutrition, public health and agriculture gathered at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wisconsin. Sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food & Fitness initiative, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Healthy Eating Research program, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy and the Johnson Foundation, the conference—known as Wingspread I—began a conversation about the impact of federal agriculture and food policies on public health, nutrition and obesity. It also sparked a discussion about opportunities for such policies to contribute to and advance healthier eating.
Building on the success of the first conference, the collaboration of funders is convening a second gathering. Like the first, the second food systems and public health conference will provide a much needed opportunity for sustainable agriculture experts, obesity researchers, advocacy groups and a select number of Food & Fitness communities to further explore and identify areas for collaboration, both in promoting research agendas as well as informing policy.
